Goodbye

The saddest day of my life came when
I looked at my friend and walked away.
I saw the puzzlement and hurt in his eyes
And I knew not what to say.

"I love you. Goodbye" was the thought
In my mind, the words I held at bay.
The saddest time of my life, the moment my heart
Turned to stone, was today.

No more surprises, no more excitement,
No more kidnappings, or romps in the hay.

I want to cry, to fight, to scream!
Now I'll have no more chances to dream.

So many thoughts of 'What if…' and 'Why?',
And always the saddest, 'I thought it
Would be until the day I die'.

To you aloud, I say:

"I did the best I could and loved you above all else. Goodbye."
