A word was said that was out of its place
I saw the look grow startled upon your face
Then it was when the deafening silence grew
That was when I had to admit I surely knew
The two of us would never, could never be
I knew I had to be brave and set you free
If I did not swallow my pride and let you go
Then my traitorous heart would truly show
I really had thought that I was so clever
If I hurt then, well, I would not hurt forever
But the dreaded moment that never was
Would eventually return to us in time because
We had pretended that it did not ever exist
We just added it to the bottom of our list
Of what we had ignored like it was not there
About the repercussions we would not care
Then one day I felt the growing distance
The intensity lessened in your persistence
Our time not together was naturally drawing near
Of that damning knowledge, we were definitely clear
The time was at hand to begin to be apart
Despite the wails of my traitorous heart
